About Fire for Effect

I’m a retired Marine Corps officer and current strategic analyst working in the Washington, DC region. I’ve also been writing for over a decade, publishing my first article as a lieutenant in 2008. I’ve since written dozens of articles, two books, and edited or co-edited two more with a third forthcoming.

Starting in January 2024, I’ll be starting a doctoral research program through the University of Reading via distance education. I’ll be researching the development of amphibious warfare theory from its origins in the 17th century through World War II.

This substack is for short form and commentary on current events in defense and national security, strategy, and military history. Posts are unedited and so typically a bit more rough than my published works. The opinions expressed are mine and mine alone, and do not reflect the views of any government entity, employer, or client.
